This digital resource uses a Macro-Enabled PowerPoint and is designed for smooth, interactive gameplay, but there are a few things you need to know before you download the file. Microsoft PowerPoint must be installed on your computer before downloading. This resource is NOT compatible with Google Slides™ or PowerPoint Online. It will not function correctly if opened using anything other than desktop-installed Microsoft PowerPoint.
Note: When opening the game, you may see a message that says “Macros have been disabled.”
Click “Enable Content” at the top of the screen to ensure all interactive features work properly.
You may also see another pop-up that says “Enable Macros” - click enable, and also click the box that says “don’t show this message again”.
This only needs to be done once per device unless macros are blocked by default in your PowerPoint settings.
Note: Macros will need to be enabled BEFORE opening the file. You must unblock macros by modifying the properties of the file as follows:
Open Windows File Explorer and go to the folder where you saved the file.
Right-click the file and choose Properties from the context menu.
At the bottom of the General tab, select the Unblock checkbox and select OK.
This spin-off of the original Beat the Timer Game takes things up a notch! Not only does it add that same exciting time-based challenge your students love, but now it also tracks exactly how students answered each question:
Got it right on the first try?
Needed one or two tries first?
Ran out of time before answering?
This added feedback gives teachers a more detailed look at student understanding and progress… perfect for formative assessment, intervention tracking, or just getting a clearer picture of what students know and how quickly.
Before diving in…
The setup, editing, and saving process is exactly the same as the original Beat the Timer game. If you haven’t already, be sure to watch the original Beat the Timer tutorial first… or revisit it if you need a refresher – CLICK HERE to watch. That will give you all the how-to you need for customizing this bonus version too (aside from the new student feedback, which we go over in the tutorial below)!
Bonus Standalone Scoreboards
These are grab-and-go Scoreboards you can use for tracking team points in any lesson. You’ll find clean, ready-made layouts for 2, 4, 5, 6 or 8 teams with two versions. You also have 2 scoring options:
Normal Versions keep scores at zero or above, so no one ever goes “into the red.”
Negative Points Allowed Versions let scores dip below zero when you want to ramp up the stakes.
These editable scoreboards are licensed for use only as part of your own products; resale of the scoreboard on its own is prohibited. They are yours to remix & include only as bundled or bonus materials within your own commercial resources. They’re perfect for gamifying quizzes, exit-ticket challenges, classroom Olympics and more, but remember: just the standalone scoreboard can’t be sold on its own. Bundle it, brand it, bonus it… just don’t list it solo!
To ensure your resource is protected from edits, follow these steps to save a protected version of your PowerPoint:
Add Protection (PC):
Save a copy of your resource by going to File > Save As. (You may want to add “PROTECTED” to the end of the file name so you can easily identify the secured version.)
Change the Save as type to PowerPoint Macro-Enabled Show (*.ppsm). This may be located under “more options”.
Click Save.
This Macro-Enabled PowerPoint Show (.ppsm) will open directly in slideshow mode and preserve all interactive functionality. Use this version to upload to TPT or assign to students while keeping your file protected.
Add Protection (Mac):
Save a copy of your resource by going to File > Save As. (You may want to add “PROTECTED” to the end of the file name so you can easily identify the secured version.)
In the File Format dropdown menu, select PowerPoint Macro-Enabled Show (.ppsm) under “Specialty Formats.”
Click Save.
The PowerPoint Macro-Enabled Show (.ppsm) file will open directly in presentation mode with all macros fully functional. This is the version you’ll want to upload to TPT or assign to students if you’re using it in your classroom.
For more detailed instructions on protecting your work, refer to the “Adding Protections” section, where you’ll find video tutorials for both PC and Mac users.
There is also a tutorial on listing to TPT along with a Canva template for teacher directions you can modify located in the "Uploading and Assigning Your Templates" section.
Escape Mission Templates
In this interactive Escape-style game, students must answer each question correctly to collect a key and move on to the next lock. Each slide presents a new challenge and with fewer answer choices each time, it only gets trickier each time!
There are two PowerPoint versions included:
One where incorrect answers disappear
One with an “Access Denied” screen when a wrong answer is clicked
And YAYYYYY there is also a Google Slides version that mirrors the second style, guiding students back to try again until they crack the code! Watch the video tutorial below and then download your templates. The protections and saving on Google Slides is very different than the PowerPoint Versions so be sure to watch to the end to see how to save and share your templates.
Also, please note: These templates do not use Macros, so when saving, you will just save as “PowerPoint Show (.ppsx)” NOT a Macro-enable PowerPoint Show! You will still password protect the file like before. In the video, I think I forgot to say this (sorry!!!).
I also updated your Canva Teacher Directions to reflect the different types of PowerPoint files as well as the Google Slide version included, in case you decide to list this resource on TPT. You can access the revised version by CLICKING HERE. Feel free to tweak the directions as needed! The current version mentions that all three formats are included, so if you’re only offering one or two in your listing, just edit the Canva file to match your resource.
Before sharing or uploading your finished game, be sure to protect your work with a password and save it in the correct format. This keeps your resource functional and secure.
